Painted from life after my spring gardening work. I had to include the inquisitive vistors! My Cup of Tea includes so many treasured pieces: silver from my Mother, a Battenburg lace tablecloth from my sister Carol, A Waterford crystal vase from my husband Buck, filled with a dozen roses. I set up the arrangement and painted it from life, then relied on photos as the roses withered. A challenge and great fun to try to capture the many textures and surfaces in this work. The colorful ceramic dragon in this arrangement is a gift that I have treasured for many years. Here he keeps company with my phalaenopsis orchid. Staging the background is an antique pillow that my mother had. The quilt pieces were cut from men's neckties!
I am honored that Dragon's Breath has been accepted for the Florida Watercolor Society 2016 Online Exhibit on the FWS website. SOLD My antique canning jars, shells I collected, a Battenburg lace tablecloth that I purchased at an St. Thomas gift shop in the 70's, fresh sunflowers from Publix... This autumn still life was painted from life. The little birdhouse was a gift from a friend. The produce manager at Winn Dixie brought out a cartload of cabbages for me, and I chose this one. In my studio, I arranged it in one of my baskets for a simple, homey subject. This holiday themed painting features a vintage tricycle horse that I saw at a shop near our home. I fell in love with it! The store owner allowed me to take photos, but she already had a buyer for my golden prancer. Surrounded by toys, Golden Prancer waits patiently for a child to discover it on Chritmas Morning. The little bear is a painting of my own first Teddy Bear.
A classic still life of favorite things arranged on my kitchen marble top pastry table- a footed Waterford bowl of sweet cherries, a French carriage clock, and one of my mother's delicate lace handerchiefs. An enjoyable challenge in painting crystal, brass, lace, and wood against a diffuse background.
The inspiration came from a photo I took in 1984 while touring Chinatown in Los Angeles.
