This watercolor was inspired by photos that I took of the Cracker Cattle Drive through Ocala to Tuscawilla Park in the spring of 2015. To convey the grit, action, and spirit of the Florida cowboy tradition, the painting is done in a looser style and in sepia tones produced by a two-color palette of ultramarine deep and brown madder. This pair of carriage horses could be anywhere, but I took photos of them waiting for passengers in front of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in July 1980, and now, 33 years later, I had the pleasure of bringing them to life again in a watercolor. The painting was juried into an Ocala Art Group exhibit in the lobby of the Ocala Civic Theatre during the month of February 2013 and juried into the Toast to the Arts exhibit at the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, November 2, 2013 through January 6, 2014. Mike and Ike was awarded Best in Show in the March 2015 Horses exhibit at MCA's Artful Gifts Gallery.
This painting fondly recalls Beaujolais and Mariah, two standard poodles who enjoyed "The Good Life" in the McMaster family for many years.
This painting was exhibited at the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala Florida in the "On the Balcony" juried exhibit of 30 selected works of art by members of the Ocala Art Group, May 16 - June17, 2012. I just had to paint another portrait of our Pinkerton. She is a wonderful little companion and follows me everywhere, including my studio. Pinkerton and Samson are our slightly spoiled "twin"Pomeranians. Our Pomeranian Samson has such bright animated eyes.
He is an affectionate little dog who likes to snuggle. A gift for Chris, a portrait of her precious little "Pixie Lane". Our Samantha relaxes in one of her typical cat poses.
Repose is one of two featured paintings in the lobby of the Bank of Inverness, November 9 - December 14, 2007. The Alpaca Show is held the last weekend of January at the nearby Ocala Equestrian Center. I've taken so many photos for reference and finally did this watercolor with a touch of humor. Alpacas are herd animals, intensely social, and the sound of their quiet chatter fills the air around the stables; no doubt they share a bit of gossip now and then.
This painting was voted by the Citrus Watercolor Club as Painting of the month for April 2006, and was honored to be on display at SunTrust Bank in Crystal River May -September 2006.
